18 months ago I never would have thought in my wildest dreams that I would adopt a Greyhound.

Like a lot of people, I knew very little about them, and I’m ashamed to say it now but in my eyes, they weren’t your typical cute, fluffy dog. I was watching Bondi Vet one night and they had a retired couple who were looking for the perfect dog to adopt. Very surprisingly (for them and myself!) it was suggested that they consider a Greyhound. I was quite intrigued by this so decided to do some research on them, and I was shocked! How had I never heard about these perfect dogs before!? Over the following months, I was constantly looking at adoption sites, until one day I came across Benji. I still don’t know what it was about him that stood out, but I knew I just had to have him. Before I knew it I had submitted an application and he was on his way to Canberra to meet me. It was love at first sight!

I didn’t know much at all about his history, but he had a huge lack of confidence and he was scared of just about everything. Despite his fears, he transitioned into home life beautifully. After a few months, he was finally confident enough to start showing his personality, and it was well and truly worth the wait. Benji is a big boy, but he has a heart to match his size. I learnt that he is very social and loves meeting and playing with other dogs of all shapes and sizes. It was an absolute joy to watch him discover the simple pleasures of life, such as sticking his head out the car window, or jumping into a big mud puddle for the first time! He is infectiously playful and has the goofiest personality that is impossible not to fall in love with.

Benji has been with me a little over 12 months now and has all but forgotten about his fears. He has the most gentle nature and is just bursting with happiness. Not a day goes by where he doesn’t make me smile and laugh. Benji has brought so much love into my life, and I could not be happier that he has introduced me to the wonderful, quirky world of Greyhounds.
