Why do greyhounds wear muzzles?
A law was introduced in Australia in 1927 stating that greyhounds must wear muzzles in public. Initially, the muzzle was introduced on the race track to prevent these animals from injuring themselves at the track.

In 2011 the NSW legislation was amended to provide an exemption to greyhounds who have successfully completed an approved greyhound re-training program and have passed the required assessment.
Owners can enrol their dogs to undertake the Greenhound or ‘Muzzle off’ program. Once the dog has passed the assessment they are not required to wear a muzzle in public whilst under the control of a responsible person. They are required to wear a special ‘Greenhound’ collar to identify them as muzzle exempt.
